Commercial Food Photography at Principality Stadium, Cardiff
I recently returned to Principality Stadium in Cardiff for a commercial food photography shoot, creating a fresh collection of professional imagery showcasing the food, hospitality and event spaces available throughout the venue.
Photographing food in a venue as recognisable as Principality Stadium is about more than simply capturing individual dishes. The images also need to communicate the quality of the hospitality experience, the presentation of the food and the setting in which guests will enjoy it.
The aim of this shoot was to create a versatile library of images suitable for use across websites, social media, brochures, hospitality marketing and other promotional material.
Showcasing Hospitality at Principality Stadium
Principality Stadium is known internationally for major sporting events and concerts, but its hospitality spaces also play an important role in conferences, corporate events and private functions.
For this shoot, I photographed a combination of plated dishes, boxed food, hospitality presentation and wider interior imagery.
Including the surroundings as part of the photography helps give the food context and allows potential customers to visualise the complete hospitality experience rather than simply seeing an isolated plate.
Professional Plated Food Photography
Plated food photography requires careful attention to lighting, composition and presentation.
Small details can make a significant difference to the final image, from the position of the plate and cutlery to the direction of the light and the angle from which a dish is photographed.
My approach is to keep the food looking natural and realistic while highlighting its colour, texture and presentation.
For commercial clients, consistency is particularly important. The finished collection needs to work together visually so images can be used across a variety of marketing platforms without looking disconnected.
Boxed Food and Casual Hospitality
The shoot also included a range of boxed and takeaway-style food options.
These required a slightly different approach to traditional plated dishes, focusing more on convenience, presentation and variety while still maintaining the polished appearance expected from professional commercial photography.
Capturing a mixture of wider compositions and close-up detail photographs gives the client more flexibility when selecting images for social media posts, website banners, brochures or promotional campaigns.
Bringing the Venue Into the Photography
One of the advantages of photographing food at Principality Stadium is having such a distinctive venue available as part of the story.
Where appropriate, I incorporated the hospitality suites and event spaces into the images rather than photographing every dish against a completely neutral background.
This creates a stronger sense of place and connects the food directly with the Principality Stadium hospitality experience.
A mixture of food-focused photographs and environmental images also gives marketing teams a much broader selection of content to work with.
Creating a Commercial Content Library
A dedicated commercial photography day provides an opportunity to create a substantial image library in one session.
For this shoot at Principality Stadium, the photography included:
Plated dishes and individual food details
Boxed and grab-and-go food
Hospitality presentation
Table settings
Wider photographs of hospitality suites
Food photographed within the stadium environment
Interior images showing spaces both with and without people
Having this variety allows the imagery to be used across multiple campaigns while maintaining a consistent visual style.
