Jessica & James’ Wedding at Bryn Meadows
Jessica and James celebrated their wedding at Bryn Meadows, with one additional guest nobody had invited — some very determined Welsh weather.
Heavy rain and stormy conditions continued throughout the day, but weddings rarely go exactly to plan and part of my job as a wedding photographer is being able to adapt when they don’t.
Rather than allowing the weather to dictate the photographs, we made use of the venue, covered areas and an indoor lighting setup to make sure Jessica and James still had a varied collection of wedding photographs telling the full story of their day.
Getting Ready at Bryn Meadows
The day began with wedding preparations and all the smaller details that come together before the ceremony.
Getting-ready photographs are about much more than simply photographing hair, make-up or clothing.
It’s a chance to document the anticipation, excitement and quieter moments between the couple and the people closest to them before everything really begins.
The Ceremony at Bryn Meadows
With the storm continuing outside, Jessica and James’ ceremony at Bryn Meadows felt warm, intimate and full of emotion.
Surrounded by family and friends, they exchanged vows while the rain battered against the venue outside, creating a real contrast between the weather and the atmosphere in the room.
I photographed the ceremony in a relaxed, documentary style, capturing the key moments as they happened along with the smiles, glances and reactions from their guests.
Those quieter, unscripted moments are often what make the ceremony photographs feel the most personal.
A Rainy Wedding Day
The weather was determined to make itself known.
Rain battered down outside, making many of the usual outdoor photography options difficult, but bad weather doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your wedding photographs.
Whenever I photograph a wedding, I’m constantly looking at the available light, surroundings and alternative locations so we always have another option.
At Bryn Meadows, that meant making good use of sheltered areas and the interior of the venue.
Indoor Wedding Portraits
With the weather showing little sign of improving, I set up additional lighting inside Bryn Meadows so we could create a selection of polished wedding portraits without Jessica and James having to stand outside in the rain.
Having professional lighting available means I’m not completely dependent on daylight or perfect weather.
It allowed us to create something different while still keeping the portrait session relaxed and relatively quick.
Natural Moments Throughout the Day
Away from the formal photographs, much of the day was captured naturally.
Guests catching up, laughter during the reception, reactions during the speeches and those small unscripted moments all form an important part of the final wedding gallery.
These are often the photographs couples appreciate even more as time passes because they show things they may not have noticed happening on the day.
Speeches and Celebrations
The wedding continued inside with the reception, speeches and plenty of reactions from family and friends.
Photographing speeches isn’t just about focusing on whoever has the microphone. Some of the best images come from looking around the room and capturing the laughter, emotion and occasional embarrassment happening elsewhere.
First Dance and the Evening
By the time the first dance arrived, the weather outside no longer mattered.
The evening celebrations gave everyone the opportunity to relax, head onto the dance floor and enjoy the rest of the wedding.
It was the perfect reminder that a great wedding day doesn’t depend on perfect weather.
