Chris and Sarah chose something a little different for their wedding at Rudry Hall — an evening ceremony followed by a relaxed celebration and a seriously lively party.
Rather than following the traditional full-day wedding timeline, their day was all about keeping things simple, personal and focused on celebrating with the people closest to them.
From the build-up before the ceremony and the vows themselves through to relaxed portraits, candid guest photographs and a packed dance floor later in the evening, the photography reflected the atmosphere of the day rather than forcing it into a traditional wedding format.
Getting Ready for an Evening Wedding
With the ceremony taking place later in the day, the build-up had a different feel to a typical morning wedding.
There was still plenty to photograph before the ceremony began, from the smaller details and final preparations to the excitement as everyone started arriving at Rudry Hall.
Even with a shorter or later wedding timeline, these early photographs help give the finished gallery a proper beginning and show the anticipation before everything gets underway.
An Evening Wedding Ceremony at Rudry Hall
Chris and Sarah’s ceremony took place in the evening, giving the wedding a relaxed and intimate atmosphere from the start.
During the ceremony, I photographed the key moments naturally — the entrance, vows, rings, reactions from family and friends and those first moments immediately afterwards.
I always try to keep my presence as unobtrusive as possible during the ceremony so the photographs feel genuine and the couple can concentrate on what is actually happening rather than the camera.
Relaxed Wedding Portraits
After the ceremony, we took some time for photographs around Rudry Hall.
My approach to wedding portraits is relaxed and straightforward. There’s no need for complicated posing or spending a huge part of the wedding away from your guests.
Instead, I give a little direction where needed, find the best available light and create a mixture of natural moments and more polished portraits.
The later ceremony also gave the portraits a slightly different atmosphere, with the changing evening light adding to the feel of the photographs.
Family, Friends and Candid Moments
A big part of Chris and Sarah’s wedding was simply capturing everyone enjoying themselves.
Alongside the essential family photographs, I spent plenty of time photographing guests naturally — conversations, laughter, reactions and all the smaller moments happening around the venue.
These candid photographs are often some of the most personal images in a wedding gallery because they show the parts of the celebration the couple may not have seen themselves.
A Wedding Without the Traditional Timeline
Not every wedding needs speeches, a cake cutting or a formal first dance.
Chris and Sarah skipped several of the usual wedding traditions and instead created an evening that suited them.
It’s something I always encourage couples to remember when planning their own wedding. There’s no requirement to follow a standard running order simply because that’s how weddings are traditionally done.
Your wedding photography can work around the day you actually want.
Then the Party Started
Once the ceremony and portraits were finished, the evening quickly turned into a proper celebration.
This was where the photography became completely documentary-led — packed dance floors, guests letting loose, laughter and all the energy that comes with a great wedding party.
Chris and Sarah may not have had a traditional first dance, but they certainly didn’t need one to get everyone onto the dance floor.
The party became a huge part of the story of their wedding, and some of the liveliest photographs of the evening came once everyone had completely forgotten about the camera.
